domain name registration - choosing your website name

Choosing and Registering a Website Name

Your domain name is the name that you choose for your website. There are 2 parts to this name. 1/ The name itself and 2/ the extension or TLD. TLD will either be a country code such as .ie or generic such as .com or .net.

When you have decided which TLD to use you will then choose a name that matches your business or the service or goods which you are selling.

This website for example is based in Ireland and offers web management services. Hence the domain name webmanager.ie.

Some TLDs will cost more than others for example generic .com and .net domain names cost less than country codes. They will also be more suitable if offering services internationally, where a country based TLD might turn away prospective customers who may think you are limited to that geographic area.

Domain names are renewed on a yearly basis but can be purchased for longer periods of time if required.

To purchase a domain name, you can simply search on the many domain name registration websites for availability of your preferred name. If that is taken you may need to come up with alternative options. The domain name can then be purchased and when this is processed the DNS (Domain Name Servers) settings can be configured to point the domain name to your hosting (where your website files are stored). Your website will then be available on the internet.

If you would like to have a domain name registered and hosted on your behalf this a service that can be provided by webmanager.ie. You can use the contact form to find out more about this.
